Susan Rogers on Engineering Prince and Her Own Path in the Music Industry

Among certain Prince enthusiasts, Susan Rogers is a legend. She engineered almost all of Prince’s recordings from his prolific, mind-bogglingly inventive mid-’80s period (she began working with him in 1983, as he was putting together Purple Rain, and left in 1987 after the recording of the legendary Black Album). To match Prince’s stamina, she regularly worked 48-hour days (not weeks, days) and put her life on hold to capture his near constant stream of creativity over the course of five fruitful years.
